A Place To Call Home
Founded as a magnesium-manufacturing town during World War II, the city of Henderson is the second-largest city in Nevada with a population of 257,729 and growing. Henderson has been rated as one of America’s safest cities in a focused poll.
Located about 15 miles southeast of Las Vegas on U.S. Highway 95, Henderson bills itself as “A Place to Call Home.” It still carries a small-town atmosphere and boasts one of the nation’s highest ratios of park and recreation space per capita. With 56 parks covering nearly 1,300 acres, Henderson earned national honors through the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies. It has become a popular residential community in Southern Nevada with its own police department, fire department and utility services.
Henderson is home to several premier master-planned communities, including Green Valley, Anthem, Seven Hills and Lake Las Vegas. Some of the valley’s more affordable homes are found in older areas of downtown Henderson, where home construction dates back to the 1940s and ’50s.
It’s a short drive from Henderson to Lake Mead National Recreation Area where visitors can enjoy swimming, boating, water skiing, fishing, and hiking. Other recreational facilities include the Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve, home to thousands of migratory waterfowl, and Henderson Pavilion, the largest outdoor amphitheater in Nevada.
A mix of national and boutique retailers and restaurants can be found at Galleria at Sunset mall and The District at Green Valley Ranch. Residents can go to Sunset Station, Green Valley Ranch or the Eldorado in downtown Henderson for neighborhood casino entertainment. The Valley Auto Mall in Henderson brings together the largest conglomeration of new car dealerships in Southern Nevada.
Several public golf courses are located in Henderson, including Wildhorse Golf Club, Black Mountain, Legacy, Rio Secco, Tuscany, and Revere.
Among major corporations with a presence in Henderson are Ocean Spray, Ethel M Chocolates, and Good Humor-Breyers.
Henderson is part of the Clark County School District and has a campus for College of Southern Nevada and Nevada State College. Private institutions include Touro University, DeVry University, International Academy of Design and Technology and ITT Technical Institute.
